Presidio Theatre Rehabilitation

The newly transformed Presidio Theatre is a true performing arts venue, with an expanded stage, 650-seat multi-use theater, dressing and green rooms, and stagecraft facilities.

Built prior to World War II on what was then the US Army Base at the Presidio in San Francisco, the Presidio Theatre served primarily as a movie house for troops stationed at the base.

Hornberger + Worstell was selected to rehabilitate and expand the theatre to become a center for community-based performing arts – dance, musical, theater, vocal ensemble – and local events. Two new above-grade pavilions house stage-level cast support, lobby reception, and circulation spaces, while a new below-grade level houses public restrooms, a rehearsal room, and other production support spaces.

The pavilions are modern additions, of our time, but designed to be compatible with the historic main theater building. A new outdoor courtyard area is designed to accommodate post-performance events that take advantage of the benign local climate and scenic surroundings in this location at the heart of the historic Presidio.
